INDIA'S NEW POETRY!

I am grateful to India’s New Poetry for this engagement with and translations of my poems from an older but favorite book Menage a Trois With the 21st Century and an essay which first appeared in Entropy (thanks Janice Lee!). Runa Bandyopadhyay’s “reviews” have always been unique and daring and the Love overcomes my lack of fluency in (is it?) Bengali. Salamat!

সম্পাদকের কলম লিখছে বিজনের আলোবাতাস,

ইচ্ছে আর অনিচ্ছে, স্বপ্ন আর স্বপ্নশূন্যতায় দুলতে থাকা জীবনে, ছিটকে পড়াগুলোই মনে থাকবে কেবল। মনে পড়ে। আর উঠে দাঁড়ানোর তীব্র সব রূপকথা, যা হয়ে ওঠে না সর্বদা। ঘন মেঘের আবছায়ায় সেই সব আচমকা রামধনু, যা মাটিতে নামে না। কেবল ভেতর হু হু করা দুপুরে এক মনচাহা গীতমালা আপনিই বেজে যায়। ‘শুনতে কি পাও গো’ বলে ডাক দিয়ে দিগন্তে মিলিয়ে যায় চেতনার হরকরা। তুমি তখন মাত্রাবৃত্তে। তখন তুমি ব্যায়ামাগারে, আখড়ায়। ভীড় আছে, হাততালি আছে তোমার পেশীনাচের তালে তালে এবং সম্ভবপর মুকুটও। সরলরেখায় গাঁথা সেই নির্ধারিত এবং নিয়ন্ত্রিত পথে কোনো যদি নেই কোথাও। যদির আকাঙ্খা এবং আশংকা নেই কোথাও। দরজা হাট করে খুলে দেওয়ার বাতাসকে আমরা এসো বলেছি, খুব ভিতর থেকে। চেতনপথের অজানায় পা ফেলবার ঊষায় কাকে যেন বড় আনন্দে বলেছি, শুনতে কি পাও গো।......ঝড় চলে যায়, ঝড় আসে। ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ে ভরা কোটাল। কেবল দীর্ঘ এক যদির মাথার তীব্র আলো ঘুরে ঘুরে পথ দেখায় চিরকালের ঢেউ ভাঙানিয়া সেই সব অভিযাত্রীদের যারা নির্মিত জনপদটিকেও তার অণু পরমাণু ফিউসন ও ইনফিউসনে খুঁজে দেখতে চেয়েছিল......বিজন আছে তো। বেলা পড়ে এল। তবু, আছে তো আমাদের স্বপ্নসফরের পথে পথে। শূন্য চেয়ার ভরে রেখেছে আলোবাতাস। বিজন, তোমার প্রবাহে আজও নতুন নবীন তরী পাল মেলে দিচ্ছে। বইমেলার তুলকালাম ভিড়ে, আছো তো তুমি, আমাদের প্রিয় বিজন...

‘IF’ your way is straight, ‘IF’ your way is rigid and constrained, ‘IF’ will be nowhere. No longing no conflict for ‘IF’ in that way. Come my dear- this is the way we are calling the wind from bottom of our heart to open the door. We were delighted to say to move on the way, to break open the barriers of the consciousness to step out into an unknown darkness, the quark area of life and being…Could you hear us?.......

I love you, dreams and dreams remain in life. I remember it. And there are many things that do not happen. In the clouds of thick clouds they are the shining rainbow that is not called on the ground. You are the only one who wants to be a favorite song in the afternoon. "what do you get to hear" what do you get to hear You are the only one who is the one who is the one who is Then you are in the gym. There is a crowd, your hand is clapping and it is possible. There is no one in the straight line. If there is no desire and fear. We have told the wind to open the door, from very inside. I have told someone in the heat of getting into the unknown path, what do you get to hear...... the storm goes away, the storm comes. It's a good day. Only a long if the intense light of the head of the head led to the end of the forever waves of the passengers who wanted to find out the mass of its nuclear fusion and inaphi'usanē...... there is a reason. COMING OUT DURING THE KOLKATA BOOKFAIR, 2019

I'm so pleased to be translated into Bengali in this way! From the co-editor's Facebook post:

ভাবনা-চিন্তার শুরু এক বছরের ও বেশি আগে। ২০১৮,ফেব্রুয়ারি,কলকাতা বইমেলার আকাশে তখন সন্ধ্যে ঘনাচ্ছে,কাফেতে আলাপরত আমরা তিন জন আর দুই মার্কিন কবি। প্রকল্পের বীজ রোপণ হল। তারপর গত একবছর ধরে নিরলস পরিশ্রমে নির্মিত হল এই  #অ_পর৩,কবিতার অতলান্তিক অনুসৃজন,প্রকাশিত হতে চলেছে ২০১৯-এর কলকাতা বইমেলায়। সমসাময়িক মার্কিন কাব্যজগতের ১২ জন প্রখ্যাত কবি এই অ্যান্থোলজিতে অংশগ্রহণ করলেন । হ্যাঁ,কারণ এটি সাধারণ আর পাঁচটি অনুবাদ বই এর মত নয় । কারণ কাজটি আমরা একা করিনি। কবিরা স্বতঃপ্রণোদিত হয়ে অংশগ্রহণ করেছেন এই প্রকল্পে। মুরাত নেমেত-নেজাত, চার্লস বার্ন্সটাইন, এইলিন আর তাবিওস, মেই-মেই বারসেনব্রাগি, মাইকেল বোওন, এলিজাবেথ উইল্‌স, জন ব্লুমবার্গ রিসম্যান, পিটার ভ্যালেন্টি, পিটার গিজ্জি, এইলিন মাইল্‌স, আদীনা কারাসিক, বব হোলম্যান এরা প্রত্যেকে নিজেরাও অংশগ্রহণ করেছেন। তাদের কাব্য ভাবনা,সমকালীন দুনিয়া ও শিল্প ও শিল্পীর সংযোগ,আরও বিবিধ জটিল ও সহজ প্রসঙ্গে তারা নিয়মিত মত বিনিময় করে গেছেন। এমনকি অনূদিত বাংলা ঠিক কি ও কতটা হলে কবিতার সঠিক ব্যঞ্জনা প্রকাশিত হবে,সে বিষয়েও তারা অংশগ্রহণ করেছেন।

in the Kolkata bookfair, 2018, we planned for a Transcreation project with 12 renowned contemporary American poetry most of whom are being translated in Bengali for the very first time. Bridgeable Lines: কবিতার অতলান্তিক অনুসৃজন is scheduled to be published this Kolkata International Bookfair, Feb, 2019. Two Bengali poets Runa Bandyopadhyay and Aritra Sanyal were editing and transcreating for this Anthology. We feel lucky to have interacted with some of the finest minds functioning in the genre of poetry. We personally thank Murat Nemet-Nejat, Charles Bernstein, Adeena Karasick, Peter Gizzi, Mei-Mei Berssenbrugge, Eileen R Tabios, Peter Valente, Elizabeth Willis, John Bloomberg Rissman, Michael Boughn, Eileen Myles, Bob Hollman for being with us throughout the transcreation project. Translated are poems from my Menage a Trois With the 21st Century. I'm glad as I've long thought that book deserves all of its exposure.

WHOAH: MY FIRST BILINGUAL EDITION! And MY HOW TO DO SELECTED POEMS

Just sitting here minding my own business and then I receive the offer for what would be my first bilingual poetry edition! Well, Thank You, Universe!  So I'm delighted to share that said bilingual edition, with its English title,

I FORGOT ARS POETICA

will be coming out of Bibliotheca Universalis in Bucharest. Yes: my first bilingual edition will see my poems translated into Romanian! Like I said, this was an unexpected opportunity -- I wasn't exactly strategizing on how to get my poetry into Romania. But, nonetheless, I am honored to have my poems enter the distinguished Romanian culture.  

And thus I've been preparing a selection of poems that, it occurred to me after my first cut at the selections, could be a rehearsal for how I might choose what may be my favorites among the 25 million poems or so that I've written. 

Precisely because I'm prolific, I've to date only chosen to do "Selected Poems" project based on form -- also, this allows readers (if they care) to see if my work has expanded the parameters of that particular form, e.g. the prose poem addressed by THE THORN ROSARY and the list or catalog poem addressed by INVENT(ST)ORY. I also have a manuscript-in-progress, HIRAETH, of Selected Poems addressing the tercet.

But for the bilingual edition, I was asked to provide (among other things) 25 poems. So how to choose the 25 poems? I can't even do a one poem per book (my preference) approach as I've written more than 25 poetry collections.

As it turns out, the answer came fairly quickly to me. There's a particular element (for lack of a better way to put it) that some of my poems have more than others when those poems tap into some stream or vein of something ineffable. All I know is that I realize I was particularly "on" or beyond myself when I wrote those poems. 99.9% of the poems in REPRODUCTIONS OF THE EMPTY FLAGPOLE contain this element (perhaps that's why it sold out its first printing in less than six months). By extension, many of the poems in SUN STIGMATA which chisel out poems from the raw material of REPRODUCTIONS ... also bear this stigmata. So, for the 25 chosen poems, 10 come from REPRODUCTIONS, 11 from SUN STIGMATA, 1 from MENAGE A TROIS WITH THE 21ST CENTURY, and 3 from AMNESIA: SOMEBODY'S MEMOIR (listed in such order below).

As expected after I made my selections--and as another reason why I previously avoided Selecteds not based on form--I felt guilty: 'twas as if I had played favorites among my 25 million poems. I'll live. But, for now, here's my first ever selection of just ... favorites. I can't feature all the favorites since I'm limited to 25, but this exercise is certainly useful as it forces me for the first time to consider what I've liked the most from what I've written.  Finally, I know you're dying to know so here are the Favored Poems that will comprise I FORGOT ARS POETICA:

Last but not least, my first bilingual edition is in a language I would not have expected. I might have thought Spanish, one of the Filipino languages... But I appreciate this unexpected development for reflecting how I'm not a Pin@y in the U.S., but a Pin@y in the diaspora. As noted Filipino poet-novelist-artist Eric Gamalinda once said, "The history of the Philippines is the history of the world." Romania, here I come! How might you translate the ineffable?

NO SLAMS AT THE POETRY SLAM!

Okay -- never too old to experience firsts.  And moi just judged my first Poetry Slam, in this case a Teen Slam, at the Napa Library in California.  I would have given 20 out of 10 to what looked like an 11-year-old contestant (11 years old?  You get the prize just coz you showed up!); but the disciplined librarians scotched my sentimentalism with their strict judging sheets.

Prizes included copies of my book MENAGE A TROIS WITH THE 21ST CENTURY!  I also performed a poem from NOTA BENE EISWEIN.  It's all good -- really heartening to see poetry live and breathe...

MENAGE WITH ME AND MOI!

Recent reading has included re-reading my own books in order to write my "poet's obituary."  And the practice affirms that what I feel to be one of my best poems are those in the book MENAGE A TROIS WITH THE 21ST CENTURY.  I mention this because I don't think it's as well known as my other books.  Also, here's a review FYI. CUT TO VALENCIA!

In my prior blog, I presented Timo Tuhkanen, a Finnish composer, artist, translator and poet who had created some new compositions related to the Enheduanna and Gabriela Silang poems in ny book, MENAGE A TROIS WITH THE 21^ST CENTURY.  Timo had sent me some visuals of his composition “CUT” and I had remarked to him that the scores could be visual art.  Here’s one:

Well, Timo’s scores just got exhibited at the Railway Gallery in Valencia (Spain) and I am so pleased to see and share some shots of the exhibit viz photos by Toni Calderon:
