NOVEL: MAY IT MOVE BEYOND META

Thanks to editor Mark Young for having my 2016 year-long diary about writing a novel, complete with "Midnight Selfies" such as the one above (I wrote at night), appear in the new issue of OTOLITHS!  You can go to it HERE, but I'll reprint my Introduction:
Before I became a full-time writer, I worked as a banker. During my last year as a banker, I would return home from the office every evening and work on my “Great American Novel.” Indeed, I opted to resign from banking when I put “The End” at the bottom of that manuscript. Unfortunately, a few months into being a full-time writer, I came to realize that that manuscript, to put it bluntly, sucked. It was, by the way, a murder mystery set in a bank—Reader, let’s pause and feel the banality together.
Pagkatapos, for the next 20 years, I attempted and failed several times to write a long-form novel. Still, in December 2015, I decided that I would make one last attempt. I determined to do so by writing on the novel everyday during the year 2016. I ordered myself the constraint: the writing could be one sentence or 10,000 words but I had to write everyday. I am delighted to announce that, for the first time as a writer, I did succeed in writing a long form novel that, unlike my first effort, actually works! It bears the working title, The 1,146th Fairy Tale
As this was a prolonged attempt at novel-writing, I also decided on the 76th day of hewing to my daily writing schedule that I would make my process public by occasionally noting updates on Facebook. My idea was that going public would fortify me not to give up as doing so would be a public humiliation—I believe that strategy worked several times as the year unfolded, especially on the days that I felt the writing wasn’t working well.
The following presents my Facebook notes of my novel-writing process, usually illustrated with a selfie. Selfies on their own don’t interest me, but my first occurred after a long, exhausting process after midnight—I usually wrote at night. Looking at my drawn face, I became interested in exploring the Midnight Selfie or Midnight’s Selfie. Lastly, as one can observe, humor became important in helping me maintain the necessary discipline to finish the novel. Please join me in my journey to the very last post on December 31, 2016.
It is too early to present any excerpt from the novel. But I will share after my last post one of the “studies” I sketched out during the writing process as I explored what story would be told by the novel. That study is entitled, “EVER AFTER.”

SUNDAY BLESSINGS

EVENT REPORT:
Today was the Methodist Book Launch (so to speak, and it amuses me to speak of it as such) of AMNESIA: Somebody’s Memoir at the Saint Helena Methodist Church. It was one of the best poetry reading experiences of my life and shows just how fruitful it can be for poets to go beyond the usual literary world contexts for presenting their poems. And thanks to Leny Strobel and Cal for attending. Leny, as my bookseller during the reception, sold out my books and folks put in several orders—never had the book bag been so light after a poetry reading. She and I just may launch a reading tour of the Methodists churches in wine country!

But what I also want to say is how synchronistically the poems ended up addressing the events of the week. There was the line “I forgot it need not take more than one person to bring the world to ruin…” which I’d written *after* the Greek Myth of Helen and the Trojan War, and yet came to address refugee matters. And when I introduced a poem partly inspired by the Philippines, unplanned by me came the line, “I just wanted to say I’m an immigrant too…” As well, it was good to share the line, “I forgot Muhammad welcoming Jews and Christians for they, too, are 'People of the Book.'" The best poems transcend authorial intent to befit whatever times surface in life, out of the poet’s control. I’m grateful I discovered some of my poems work in this manner.

I learned, too, that the cello (and piano, except that the cello was a revelation) is a wonderful accompaniment to my poems courtesy of the Napa Valley Duo. As well, I was blessed by the company of Linda Lang’s artworks. Anyway, my heart is full. Thank you, Universe.

 (Rev. Audrey and Leny Strobel)

 (artist Linda Lang)

While my reading focused on AMNESIA, I also read poems from FOOTNOTES TO ALGEBRA and THE LIGHT SANG AS IT LEFT YOUR EYES:

Of course, I was blessed, too, to be in the company of Micah, Matthew, and Chopin.

And afterwards, the stillness of peace:

"A SPUNKY COLLECTION OF VERSES"

"powerful and empowering"
-The Manila Standard

In a marvelously headlined article, Jennifer Ortuoste reviews Puñeta: Political Pilipinx Poetry for The Manila Standard. You can see the entire review HERE, where she also helpfully discusses the term "Pilipinx."

You can read PUNETA for free HERE, or purchase a print copy HERE.

ECSTATIC MUTATIONS! A BLAST FROM THE PAST

It's been over 16 years since I released the book ECSTATIC MUTATIONS: Experiments in the Poetry Library. I'm pleased to see it still being read, in that it was recently written up in Aloysiusi Lionel Polintan's Renaissance of a Notebook. Maraming Salamat for this bravely personal engagement by a lover of literature.

FEATURED AS (I MEAN, AT) LITTER

Wow. An unexpected feature on Moi over at Leafe Press' LITTER Magazine! As in

     Introduction

As they say, I'm gobsmacked. Thanks to editor & reviewer Alan Baker, interviewer John Bloomberg-Rissman, reviewer Valerie Morton and avatar Angelo Suarez. The new poems are from a manuscript, HIRAETH.  And here's the "Author Photo" they chose from googling me.

From Valerie Morton's review of I FORGOT ARS POETICA:
There is continuous movement in these poems which hop from place to place within the mind, hardly allowing the reader a breathing space, and like a musical concerto reaching great heights and lows, twists and turns.  Although I never quite comprehend the “you” throughout this work, I do enjoy the mystery of trying to fathom whether this is the country left behind, the one waiting ahead or a lover, a parent, a friend. But this seems unimportant as whichever way it is read it comes back to the same thing—loss/discovery, displacement, loneliness, passions, fears—eventually settling in acceptance and re-discovery of the true sense of the self re-emerging and free. The ‘you’ becomes what you want it to. And yet the reader never becomes “resigned” —there are forever more questions to be asked.

From Alan Baker's review of THE OPPOSITE OF CLAUSTROPHOBIA:
There are passages of rare beauty, there are striking phrases and cadences, and there surprises on every page:
I forgot meagre pity.I forgot omission as confession.I forgot dungeons waste marble.
And always, throughout the sequence, there is an abiding sense of mystery:
I forgot her hobby of attending to deathbeds – afterwards she always lusted forhotel lobbies stuffed with crystal chandeliers
By generating these poems, and by using her own past poetry as raw material, Tabios has breathed new life into the “I remember / I forget” form, in a way typical of this inventive poet.

Thank you, Universe.

THE OPPOSITE OF CLAUSTROPHOBIA

Deep gratitude to Valerie Morton and The Poetry Shed for its review of The Opposite of Claustrophobia: Prime's Anti-Autobiography. Among its stellar elements, the review explains the (sub)title!  You can see entire review HERE but here's an excerpt:
The very words in this collection seem to breathe –
I forgot I saw a city breathing beyond the window
I forgot the musk of evenings quivering into post-elegance
I forgot a sarong fell and a river blushed
I forgot a girl singing as she smooched the sun …..
The poetry of Eileen Tabios invites us to look at what it truly means to be part of the human race, not merely a fragment of it. Challenging in its width and breadth, I would highly recommend this collection – it is at the same time startling and unnerving, not always comfortable reading, but every page/every line is an adventure in itself. If you are prepared to travel with her you will be astonished at her creativity and will close the last page wanting more:
I forgot the perfume of fresh bread outside a panetteria, the vinegary tang floating from a wine shop, heaven as the scent of roasting coffee from a grocer, and the necesssary reminder of those different from us through the stench of street drains

Also, the book is published in the U.K. but it also just got listed on Amazon.

DICKINSON UNBOUND!

Dickinson Unbound by Alexandra Socarides is the best book on Emily that I've read. I suffered through Oxford's frugal-sized typeface to enjoy this with a pear pecan muffin and white chocolate mocha at local cafe.

Speaking of publications, here's my latest Relished W(h)ines update of recently imbibed books and wines.  As ever, please note that in the Publications section, if you see an asterisk before the title, that means a review copy is available for Galatea Resurrects!  More info on that HERE

THANK YOU, EDITORS OF JOURNALS AND ZINES!

I don’t focus as much on literary journals as books. But I have accumulated much over the years. This morning was for going through the library and weeding out journals to donate to the local library. The photo above are of two of the stuffed shopping bags for said donation.

But I made exceptions for the following journals below. In general, I kept their issues because they teach me much about poetry. Not all poems, even the ones I enjoy, teach me something about poetry so my keeping of these journals is a compliment to their participants and editors. This means, please consider this post, too, to be a THANK YOU, to the listed editors below for their good work:

VERSE (editors Brian Henry and Andrew Zawacki)

TINFISH (editor Susan Schultz)

AURGABE  (editors E. Tracuy Grinnell, Julian T. Brolawski and erica kaufman)

THE MISSOURI REVIEW (literary editor Speer Morgan but the issue I kept is mostly for its interesting interview with Andrei Codrescu)

RHIZOME (editors Standard Schaefer and Evan Calbi)

CUTBANK (editors Brandon Shimoda and Devon Wootten)

POSITIVE MAGNETS (editor Collin Schuster)

(THE INVISIBLE CITY) (editors Marcella Durand, Richard O'Russa and Karoline Schleh)

MEM 4, 2006 (editor Jill Stengel)

VANITAS (editor Vincent Katz)

GAPE-SEED 2011 (editors Ice Gayle Johnson and Jane Ormerod)

BIRD DOG (editor Sarah Mangold)

TIGERTAIL: A SOUTH FLORIDA ANNUAL (editors Max Winter, Michael Hettich, Campbell McGrath, Richard Blanco, Emma Trelles)

I'LL NEVER FORGET THIS REVIEW

I'm grateful, deeply grateful. But, mostly, I am amazed by this review. Very very surprised (specifically at that first paragraph). But Kevin Killian, as many know, is a generous being. Thank you, Kevin: AMNESIA was blessed to be read by you.

Here's part of what Kevin says:

The “forgets” are often tender as well as candid, and it would take a hard heart not to be moved by Tabios’ vision of life as a pageant of feeling and vision, unrolling before us on crystalline rods oiled perfectly with WD40. Has anything happened to anyone anywhere that this book does not prophesy forgetting? I doubt it.
I also like reviews that teach me something. So now, I know what "WD40" is -- who'da thunk I'd learn it from a poetry review?!

Bless you, Kevin Killian.

TO BE AN EMPIRE IS TO BURN!

And it's out! My chap TO BE AN EMPIRE IS TO BURN inaugurates Moria Book's "politically oriented" locofo chaps series. By "political" I mean the state of the nations U.S.A. and Philippines, as well as the poetry world (insomuch as one can address such in 20 pages). If you don't know some of the mentioned people, they're easy to google.

A free online read HERE and a printed version is available for $5 at Moria Books' Lulu account HERE.  Thanks for your interest!

MY "RELISHED" READS OF 2016

In 2016, I read 478 publications, as follows:

Poetry or Other Genre by Poets: 405
Art: 13
Fiction: 39
Others: 21

The 405 poetry reads is a drop from 2015 when I read 495 publications by poets or on poetry. Still, that's a higher level than in 2014 when I read 372 poetry publications, and in 2013 when I read 319 suchpublications. Here's my 2016 Reading List for your reading pleasure, with a bonus shot of  my reading eyes lit aglow by all that pow-et-tree:
